Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed as a young girl, requiring her mother to support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. However, she was only in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, acting work she longed to do was abyssal. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she was able to earn a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
